"To His Coy Mistress"

When I read this poem I knew it was from 1681 because it states that was the date it was written. It is weird that a poem written in the 17th century is still popular, but I think it is still popular for a couple of reasons.
1)Its about sex, and no matter what anyone says thats interesting to read about.
2) A lot of girls can relate to the way he's talking to her

I read this poem and kind of took a modern day approach. The first thing I thought was frat boys. Now, no offense to all frat boys but the ones that I have come into contact with all seem to have a game plan similar to the man in this poem. The man in this poem tells the woman he loves her to no end and if he could love her forever he would but time is running out. In his line "Now therefore, while the youthful hue sits on thy skin like morning dew..." he is saying that while they are still young they must act now. This is how I compare the man in the poem to frat guys, well I guess mostly all guys in college, but they have a way in trying to talk a girl into doing things they probably don't want to or shouldn't do, and for the record I've had the speech given to me, but I didn't fall for it.

Journal #1- how I feel about poetry

So, I've always wanted to be the kind of person who could talk about their favorite poets, or their favorite poems, but truthfully ive never been able to get into poetry. I guess it frustrates me because I'm the kind of person that doesn't like to dance around a subject, I would much rather the subject of a conversation, story, arguement to be laid down on the table point blank. Poetry isn't like that and that confuses me. Its hard for me to look deep and try to come up with what the poet was trying to say about war, in 3 lines that seem to be about a little boy playing.

Now i'm not trying to sound bitter or unwilling to try, but I know its going to be dificult, but i'm excited about the chance I have to actually understand and possibly enjoy some poetry. I absolutely love to read, but poetry was the one thing I could never get into. Hopefully this year will be different and I can learn a thing or two about it and maybe get some enjoyment out of it.
